From Mainland British Columbia to Vancouver Island:

Once you are in Vancouver, you must catch a BC ferry from either Tsawwassen or Horseshoe Bay.  If you are arriving from the States or the airport, the Tsawassen terminal is easier to reach.  This sailing is 2 hours long.  From the interior of British Columbia, it fairly equal time & distance to either terminal.  From downtown Vancouver, Horseshoe Bay is closer, but you’ll want to avoid rush hour to cross the bridges.  During the 2010 Olympics, definitely avoid Horseshoe Bay as this is on route to Whistler!  The crossing to and from Horseshoe Bay is much more scenic, and only 1.5 hours.  Also check the timing on the BC Ferries’ schedule as this will also determine which route is best for you. Their website will give you all the information you need, and we strongly suggest you make a reservation during the summer season and long weekends!
BC Ferries

Both routes bring you into Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island, which is an easy 1.5 - 2 hour drive on the flat, 4-lane inland highway.  Campbell River is 3.5 – 4 hours from Victoria on the same highway, which is slower-moving between Victoria and Nanaimo.

Other Car Ferries from Washington:

Please check these websites for schedules and fares.  Compare it to the rates with BC Ferries…it might be a better option to drive over to Vancouver instead.

By Car Ferry to Quadra Island

Located across Discovery Passage from Campbell River, Quadra Island is reached by a short 12 minute ferry ride. Ferries leave Campbell River hourly, on the hour, and leave Quadra Island on the half hour.  However, there are a couple of variations to this schedule so we will email you the schedule and recommend printing a copy to refer to on your travels. During the summer months and long weekends, overloads for the ferry are common, so plan to arrive 30-45 minutes before a sailing if possible.  In the off-season it is still a good idea to arrive 15 minutes ahead of the sailing time.

Van Shuttle to Nanaimo:

Island Link Bus Services
Island Link offers bus service to and from Vancouver, Horseshoe Bay, Departure Bay, & Nanaimo.  They operate an online reservation system, and are also available by phone to help you organize your ride.  It is possible to coordinate a ferry crossing with their schedule.  The drop-off and pick-up in Campbell River is at the Tyee plaza, which is just across the highway from the ferry terminal to Quadra Island.

Car Rental Agencies

The best rates for car rentals are available when you pick up and drop off your rental car at the same depot.  This is especially apparent if you try to arrange to drive one-way and fly the other between Vancouver Island and Vancouver city.  It is a wonderful idea, however, the rental company will severely charge you for the convenience, as they do not like to have their cars left on the island, or vice-versa.
